As an observant designer (alright, I suppose that phrase might be a bit of an oxymoron) I can't help but notice that there is a massive obsession in the creative world with birds. As someone planning a wedding, I have also run into my fair share of birds (also noted by another bride as "kissing birds syndrome"). I have nothing against birds. In fact, that's not true. Lately, they've been doing a number on my car with their doodie. Aside from that, I have nothing against birds. My problem is gratuitous use of cute birdies on random things because it's trendy. My usual reaction to trends is to stay away from them, unless I can find a way to put a very distinctive spin on it as my own. I was explaining this to the fiancé the other day as we watched this clip from Portlandia:
Then he turned to me and said, "Didn't our Christmas cards have birds on them?"
So busted. I totally used a gratuitous bird on our Christmas cards and I didn't even think twice about it. Oh well. At least he's definitely a distinctively Julie-ized bird and he also isn't making out with any of his buddies.
