Visual Vocabulary: Aplomb

Aplomb: Great coolness and composure under strain. As in, “The coal faced the diamonds with aplomb when they pressured him to change who he was and join their group.”

Visual Vocabulary: aplomb, Julie Rado Design

First off, I’m hoping that next week I’ll be back to posting my word on Wednesday instead of sliiiiiding it in to Thursday. December is kicking my ass (anyone else?) and I haven’t even bought a single present, decorated the tree, or watched ANY Christmas movies yet (Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?) None of this bodes well for my timely posting, but we can hope for a Christmas miracle. Second: I had this drawing sitting in my head for a few weeks and was considering how weird it was of me to anthropomorphize coal, and then this morning on the radio I heard the new Killers Christmas song, “Joel, the lump of coal.” So I guess I’m in pretty good company. What makes you weird makes for good illustrations. Or songs.

Visual Vocabulary is a project I created for myself in which I attempt to sear new words into my memory by illustrating them. You can see all of them here, and read more about the process behind them here.
