Congreso 2017 Gala Latina: Quito

For the 2017 Congreso Gala Latina, themed around Quito, I wanted to use the stained glass of the city’s famous cathedrals as our main piece of inspiration—but to give it a twist, I also wanted to try and make the look of the stained glass modern. This also worked well with additional inspiration from traditional South American textile art, which uses repetitive geometric forms to create larger patterns.

This invitation suite won a 2019 AIGA Philadelphia Design Award.

(Work done at Untuck with John & Amy Saal)

I started by creating a Q, loosely based on the shape of the famous round stained glass in the Basilica of the National Vow in Quito, out of overlapping, translucent shapes of golds and blues.

The symmetrical letterform of the Q embodies the spirit of stained glass while also making it more modern. The logotype acts as a window to show through to the underlying stained glass pattern.

We opted for a translucent envelope so that the stained glass effect could really be on display when people received their invitations.

Throughout the collateral, a pattern that was created from the deconstructed layers of the Q from the logo repeats and overlaps to create an exuberant design.

Embracing the geometry and angles of the deconstructed pattern, I created a custom fold for the invitation, which folds on the diagonal but ends up as a tidy rectangle.
