Congreso 2017 Gala Latina: Quito
BACKGROUND
For the 2017 Congreso Gala Latina, themed around Quito, I wanted to use the stained glass of the city’s famous cathedrals as our main piece of inspiration—but to give it a twist, I also wanted to try and make the look of the stained glass modern.
This also worked well with additional inspiration from traditional South American textile art, which uses repetitive geometric forms to create larger patterns.
🏆 This invitation suite won a 2019 AIGA Philadelphia Design Award.

I started by creating a Q, loosely based on the shape of the famous round stained glass in the Basilica of the National Vow in Quito, out of overlapping, translucent shapes of golds and blues.
The symmetrical letterform of the Q embodies the spirit of stained glass while also making it more modern. The logotype acts as a window to show through to the underlying stained glass pattern.
