PolicyLab at CHOP “You Make the Difference” Campaign

BACKGROUND

PolicyLab approached Untuck for help with a pilot project intended to brighten the days of clinicians working in pediatric behavioral health. Through their research, PolicyLab knew that these settings are rife with burnout among clinicians who were trying to do their best by kids and their parents.

The goal was to create a high-impact, low-cost trial campaign with messaging that was encouraging to all. The hope was that what we created would boost morale not just among clinicians, but also among kids and caretakers. They asked Untuck to create materials for this campaign that, if successful, would be rolled out at other hospitals as part of a larger system. We came up with the idea of pointing out specific good qualities that would have a positive effect on anyone reading them and coined it the “You Make the Difference” campaign. Each phrase is paired with fun, modern illustrations for some day-brightening visual delight.

We brainstormed ideas for swag that clinicians and hospitals would actually use and be easy for them to incorporate in a clinical setting.

Buttons on lanyards, posters lining a hallway, and stickers on ever-present bottles of hand sanitizer were a few that we thought could be workhorses. We suggested that the posters link clinicians with a peer support group once the campaign receives more funding and those resources are in place.

We know that burnout is a much bigger issue than we can tackle with some stickers and posters, but since the budget was small, we suggested that handwritten thank you notes from a manager or team member could go a long way.

And bonus if there was a gift card included. Obviously. 👀

Since this campaign was meant to be seen by all (clinicians, parents, and kids), I couldn’t let go of the idea of making a really simple interactive installation. So, I came up with the idea of having a wall graphic where anyone could call out the positive qualities they saw in others by filling out a sticky note and filling in the blank of “Your [blank] makes all the difference.”

Two people with motion blur walk by and interact with a wall graphic covered in sticky notes. The wall graphic reads "Your [blank] makes all the difference" and adjectives to fill in the blank are handwritten on each sticky note.
